Last year Kayla and I went on a week long holiday to Malaysia. This was her first trip overseas and my first international trip that wasn’t with my family or with work for a conference.
Here are the photos that I shared to Facebook during our stay. Most of it is of the amazing food we had. All the meals we had were about 1/3 the price you’d expect to pay for it in Australia, so it was great value and we ate out a lot.
We didn’t post any photos on our first night as we were quite tired and a little shaken after a terrifying drive from the airport with a terrible taxi driver. I wonder if that guy is still alive, because surely he’s caused an accident by now.
The first place we stopped to eat was Johnny Rockets, an American burger chain to our knowledge at the time, was not active in Australia. I just noticed we have 1 here now in Fortitude Valley in QLD which opened in 2017. I guess we might go check that out next time we’re up north.
Here we are in front of the indoor roller coaster at Berjaya Times Square in Kuala Lumpur. This is a massive shopping centre with a large amusement centre inside it. It was quite impressive, but many of the stores in this mall were of low quality, with plenty of fake merchandise.
Here we are at D Empire, an Italian restaurant in Pavillion, which is a much more premium mall. This place had buy 1 get 1 free cocktail specials. It was great to have a Singapore Sling again, I haven’t had one of those since I attended the CommunicAsia Expo in Singapore in 2013. This cocktail is not on the menu at most places in Australia.
Whenever we travel, I bring my iPad mini 4 with an HDMI adaptor and HDMI cable so we can watch things I’ve bought off iTunes so we don’t have to stream anything. This time though, we had issues with the TV so we had to watch stuff on the small iPad screen. This wasn’t a big deal as we were quite busy most of the time anyway. We did get room service a few times throughout the trip. The food was great value, but soft drink and alcohol was about the same prices as each other which was weird. We also had a few take away deliveries sent to the hotel.
Here we are at Wong Kok at Pavilion. Here we had some contemporary food from Hong Kong and was our first Asian meal. We had the following:
- Cheese baked rice with chicken chop in Neapolitan sauce Hong Kong style.
- Baked chicken wings with cheese.
- Bolognese charcoal thick toast with cheese.
- Boiled Coke with ginger.
- Milo ice blend
It was unusual to see so much cheese in Asian food and even more unusual to boil Coca Cola. We need to go to Hong Kong one day.
This was probably our Favourite meal of the trip, Chir Chir at Pavilion. The yellow thing is a heater for melting a cheese fondue sauce. We had no idea it was possible to make fried chicken even less healthy.
I always feel awkward in front of the tourist spots by myself. Here I am in front of the Petronas Twin Towers.
Here are the steps in front of the Batu Caves which have temples inside them. Those steps look fun with all the bright colourful paint, but they are quite shallow and steep. For an added challenge there’s wild monkeys all over the place. It was quite exhausting, but very beautiful.
This is what it looked like inside one of the caves at the Batu Caves. There was a lot of construction or repairs occurring in here when we were there.
Here we are at Sunaway Lagoon, a large water theme park Kuala Lumpur. It was great. We didn’t take as many photos as we would have liked as we had our bags cloaked for much of the day. Also, Kayla wouldn’t let me take any photos whilst her hair was wet.
This is the Honolulu Cafe. The Pork Belly was great.
Here we are at the Genting Highlands Premium Outlets. I didn’t buy anything here as there was nothing in my size. There were a lot of good brands there and the place is also accessible via a cable car but we didn’t use that.
Here we are in the Royale Chulan swimming pool. It was a nice pool but Kayla didn’t want to get her hair wet so it was difficult to get a photo of whilst making the most of my LifeProof awaterproof iPhone case.
The original photo for this on Facebook had an issue and all the associated text has disappeared so I don’t recall where this was, but it was another place with fried cheese sauce for our food.
Another highlight of the trip was that there were several Toys R Us stores still operating after all the ones in most other countries had closed down. Here’rs a photo of me in front of one of them.
That’s the last photo I posted of the trip. This group of photos contains a hidden object in each of them. This was during the peak of the Coles Minis promotion… So I hid one of mine in each photo. This was really frustrating for Kayla as well as my friends who were trying to find them in the photos, as a few of them are actually near impossible due to the compression of the photos.
